As part of the integration and co-ordination of sea rescue services, Jersey Coastguard is responsible for the Beach Lifeguard Service

The service is managed by Chief Lifeguard, Mr Paul Berghouse and Paul carries out recruitment and selection for Lifeguards each year, with the majority of his team coming from Australia and South Africa

History

The first lifeguards to operate in Jersey were South Africans privately employed at the Watersplash from the late 1950's. The Jersey Lifeguard Club also operated on an amateur basis at weekends and in the evenings, and with funding from Tourism two professional Australian lifeguards were brought to Jersey to train the club members

In the 1960's, the club disbanded and Tourism took over the running of the service, basing it at premises alongside the El Tico site, along St Ouens bay

There are 12 members of the service, all qualified and experienced lifeguards, and an additional 4 are taken on during the summer holidays

They patrol from 10am to 6pm, though will work later on evenings when favourable tides and weather attract large numbers of bathers
