Steeped in history, Gorey Harbour was once one of Jerseys main anchorages and ports. Guarded by the magnificent Mont Orgueil Castle, which dates back to the twelfth century, this picturesque port offers local shops and pubs along with many fine restaurants and a visitors interpretation centre along the pier, where duty free fuel is also available for boats. Gorey was also home to some of Jerseys large fishing fleets during the 17th - 19th centuries with the newest part of the harbour pier arm being extended during the early 19th century to accommodate the growing number of local fishing vessels seeking shelter in this port. Today Gorey offers to serve mainly private pleasure craft although a number of commercial fishing vessels still reside here and with the French coast only 15 miles away it is a favoured stopover port for both local and visiting yachtsmen. Visitor holding buoys are provided just to the south western edge of the harbour. Gorey is a drying harbour so it is advised that any craft planning to visit this port or stopover on the visitor buoys should ensure their vessel can take the ground during low water periods. |
